SMS Keywords

 

SMS Keywords allow recipients to interact with your SMS program by sending specific words to your designated short code. When a keyword is received, PostUp can automatically perform actions such as subscribing or unsubscribing recipients, updating recipient data, or sending automated responses.

SMS Keywords are commonly used for managing subscriptions, collecting data, and enabling interactive SMS experiences.

Creating an SMS Keyword

To create an SMS keyword:

  1. Navigate to the SMS Keywords configuration screen.

  2. Enter the keyword in the Keyword field. This is the word recipients will text to your short code to trigger the configured action.

Example keywords might include:

  • JOIN

  • STOP

  • INFO

  • DEALS

When a participant sends the keyword, PostUp processes the request and performs the configured action.

Configuring Keyword Actions

The Action section defines what happens when the keyword is received.

Alter Recipient Membership

Enable Alter Recipient Membership to manage list subscriptions based on the keyword.

Available options include:

  • Globally unsubscribe the recipient

  • Subscribe the recipient to a list

  • Unsubscribe the recipient from a list

  • Confirm list membership

  • Add the recipient's email address to a list

These actions allow SMS messages to control how recipients are added to or removed from messaging lists.

Update Recipient Field

You can also update recipient profile information when a keyword is received.

  1. Enable Update Recipient Field.

  2. Select the field you want to update from the dropdown list.

This allows you to capture or update subscriber data directly through SMS interactions.

Configuring Responses

You can configure an automated response that is sent back to the recipient after the keyword is received.

  1. Use the Send a Response Using Send Template dropdown to select an existing send template.

  2. Click Create Send Template if a response template has not yet been created.

This response message can confirm the action taken or provide additional information to the recipient.

How SMS Keywords Work

Once configured:

  1. A recipient sends the keyword to your designated short code.

  2. PostUp processes the keyword and performs the configured action.

  3. If a response template is configured, an automated reply is sent back to the recipient.

SMS Keywords allow you to automate subscription management and create interactive SMS experiences without requiring manual intervention.
